THE POWER OF COMPASSION

It’s amazing how some of the things that we often pay very little attention to or even neglect, so often times hold the most significant values in our lives. I used to have a certain female acquaintance who often told me of how the little things I did for her were the ones she treasured the most. She made me realize that what matters most to her is not the enormity of my action but the sincerity and genuineness behind it.

Every day we are presented with an opportunity to touch the lives of people by paying attention to their pressing needs. That lone act of compassion that can transform their lives without necessarily costing us anything. You could deny yourself of that bowl of ice-cream and pizza just to put food on someone’s table or to pay for another’s hospital bill.

According to the Jewish faith, many things are important to God, but a simple act of compassion and kindness is most valuable to him. To make an impact in someone’s life is an enormously satisfying feeling and takes a lot of integrity. Because in the world that we live in, it is sometimes difficult to think of any other person other than ourselves. We only remember others when we have attained a certain level of satisfaction.

Compassion allows us to think of others more than we think of ourselves. It gives us the ability to understand people’s situation better and to focus more on their needs than ours. That desire to make life better not only for ourselves but also for those around us is the greatest gift we can bestow.

It’s more than just an emotional or sympathetic feeling. Having a feeling towards someone’s plight is not enough; we must possess the courage to make a meaningful impact that will bring the desired change by lifting people up, encouraging them and helping them discover true happiness.

Nothing can have a faster impact in the life of a person than compassion, this is why its positive effects can be multiplied. When the person who receives compassion shares the benefits with others, it begins a chain reaction that can reach unimaginable heights. We each have an endless supply of compassion and it costs us nothing to share it with others.

The purest form of compassion is when it’s shown to someone who will never know of your kindness or have an opportunity to pay you back. That willingness to demonstrate kindness without the thought of what we might get in return is the true nature of compassion. The satisfaction comes from the knowledge that you were able to make a difference in someone’s life.

Compassion must be genuine, sincere and must come from the heart. It’s an act of kindness performed simply because it is the right thing to do. It is when we least expect that compassion often produces the most spectacular results. This is when we will experience the deepest sense of joy and fulfillment.

Finally, the reward we receive from showing compassion is far more important than any sacrifice that we will ever pay in the process. That simple act of compassion you perform today, might just be the only thing that you will forever be remembered for.
