NIGERIA LEADS SMARTPHONES MARKET IN AFRICA


Nigeria has been identified as the continent’s leader when it comes to smartphones penetration with a healthy 41 percent and is followed by South Africa with 31 percent while Kenya is a distant third with 7 percent.
This was disclosed by George Ferreira, the Vice-President and Chief Operating officer of Samsung Electronics Africa, at the launch for the new Galaxy Note II and Samsung Camera held recently in Cape Town, South Africa.

Ferreira stated that Africa is now the second largest and fastest mobile phone market in the world after China, with Nigeria leading the pack in smartphone sales. He explained that the usage grew from a base of 90 million in 2005 to a current estimate of 450 million handsets in 2012.

According to Emmanuel Revmatas, the Samsung Electronics in West Africa business leader for Nigeria, the advent of new privately-owned submarine cables and their landing on the coast of many East and West African countries, including Nigeria, have significantly reduced the cost of internet access and increased the adoption of smartphones in Africa.    

With this development, manufacturers of smartphones like Samsung and Apple who will now recognized Nigeria as a strategic market to sell their products, maximize profits and confidently harness human resources.
