FOURTEEN YEAR OLD NIGERIAN MAKES HER DEBUT IN THE FASHION WORLD

Tumisola Ladega is not your average teenager who is often burdened with the rigours of school work or worried sick over challenges of puberty. Her concerns are quite of a peculiar nature. At just  14 years old, she broke into the fashion world debuting her collections.

Tumisola was recently announced as the winner of the UK FDC Young Designer Award where she was selected to debut her collection at the 2012 FDC Young Designer Awards at the Pullman London Hotel, as well as in the Fashion Designers Expo in Florida, USA.

According to Joanna Marcella CEO and Founder of UK's Fashion Designer and Craft makers Young Designers Award, "Leading up to and during last years awards Tumi proved to be a very articulate and dynamic young designer who delivered totally on the brief that was set which was to design garment inspired by one of the great artist. Tumi chose Wassily Kandinsky, she is truly a worthy winner of this fantastic opportunity.”

An equally excited Tumi added, "I am so honoured and excited to be offered this great opportunity to take part in the Fashion Designers Expo in Florida. It is my ambition to study fashion at the best fashion school in the United Kingdom & I believe that the FDE week will greatly benefit me in the future as it is a fantastic platform for me to exhibit my designs to a wider audience, especially in another continent, giving me the much needed exposure away from home in the UK. It will also serve as a springboard to actualizing my vision of being a world renowned fashion designer with my own fashion house & label."

Tumi was 12 year old when she entered the FDC Young Designer Awards but she has proven that she is a future fashion star in the making. Tumisola won second place in her first public fashion competition organized by the FDC Young Designer Awards in Oct 2011. The event, which was held in London, earned her a place at the Fashion Designer Expo Florida to debut her first collection.

Born to Nigerian parents, Tumisola is currently in Year 10 at the Newstead Woods School for Girls in Kent, United Kingdom. She has always had a passion for fashion from the tender age of 6. Then, she would draw Cinderella and other Disney characters with such detail and accuracy that was beyond that of a child. This was her bedrock for what would later become fashion drawings. Her work stood her out in school and she was later chosen to be in the art academy which was a select group of children with exceptional talent in art and design.

I hope that many young Nigerians out there will be inspired by her ingenuity and pursue their dreams passionately. Keep making us proud Tumi.
